Alicante Bouschet is one of the rare teinturier grape varieties, meaning it has red flesh and red juice — unlike most red grapes, which have clear pulp, and is known for its rich color, deep flavor, and powerful structure, this variety has become one of Alentejo's most celebrated reds. If you're wondering what foods match its intensity, you're in the right place.
History and Origin
It was developed in France in the mid-19th century by viticulturist Henri Bouschet, who crossed Petit Bouschet (itself a hybrid) with Grenache. The result was a grape with deep color, robust tannins, and high productivity.
It did not really catch on in it's native country but found its true home in Portugal, particularly in the Alentejo region, where it adapted beautifully to the warm climate and poor soils. Over the 20th century, Portuguese winemakers embraced it for its richness, structure, and blending versatility. Today, it’s considered a flagship variety of the Alentejo — often vinified as a varietal wine and prized for its aging potential and intensity.
Flavor Profile
Expect aromas of dark berries, black plum, and spices like clove and black pepper. On the palate, Alicante Bouschet delivers bold tannins, juicy acidity, and a long, robust finish. Oak-aged versions can carry hints of chocolate, smoke, and tobacco.
Why It Thrives in Alentejo
The conditions of the Alentejo allow the grape to ripen perfectly, developing intense color and flavor while maintaining balanced acidity. Its thick skins and drought resistance make it particularly suited to Alentejo's sun-drenched vineyards, where it consistently produces concentrated, age-worthy wines.
